I have completed the Soweto Marathon, a major south African race. The result I have a lot of training still left to do.
It started really nicely, I completed the 21 in about 2:15, so my time was in line for me to qualify for the big ultras. Sadly there was no water between kms 21 and 33, dehydration was experienced quite forcibly. It was terrible but at least I completed, time 5:20, and I know the pain and effort required to complete races of this magnitude.
Next race I hope to qualify with is the Pretoria marathon, I hope I can succeed.
The thing is that after such a bad race, my motivation has been knocked abit, and lovely wife tries her best to support me, but I have high demands of myself, so inevitably I feel abit depressed.
Next step I will need to train much harder, punish ourselves so that we can punish the race.
join a club, people with like minded goals can definitely help. Invest in water bladder so I have water during my training. Investigate the effect of gu and other carbohydrate gels on my energy levels.
If my Zak was not there to comfort me and drive me back home I could have been in worse off condition than the way I finished. She took really good care of me, and organised me ice cream and mochachoes, yeah :)
With her at my side I know I will be successful. What a great support structure I have.
My former training partner has pulled out of the challenge of completing the 2 oceans and comrades. He gave up because he did not want to get seriously injured. good luck to him and I hope he does eventually attempt a big race.
On another note Next year I am coming with a vengeance for the Soweto marathon, BEWARE!
Just a side note, I completed a marathon 1 yr and 7 months since I got knocked by a car. Yes you guessed it knocked by a car and I was on crutches for 3 months. I might ellaborate in the future.

the half
Since my last post, I have done a 21.1 km race, a half marathon. This race is known as the woodlands boulevard enduro race on the 16th October 2010.
Lesson number 1 beware of races that are sponsored by groups with the name enduro. The 1st 2/3 kms is a uphill and we did this portion twice and beyond that there were about 12 hills on the course. It was a cranker. That being said my time was good, infact pleasant to me, I did the race in 2h 15min.
At every race I learn something new, something about myself, and in this race it was my mental strength, the ability to overcome pain and finish well. How i handle myself with a cold start.
How my body handles chaffing(a funny but very painful reality)
In the end I enjoyed the race, and that is what it comes down to, you will only succeed when you are having fun.
My training partner WMS has bought the book the lore of running, this is like the holy book of running and WMS being the responsible one is taking things to 1st principles and I am adding to my knowledge base with his help. In the future we will do some pretty awesome races!

exciting times
I've completed 2 races since my last post, a 15km race in Britz and the chamberlain 10km race in pretoria.
After 3 races the one thing I really appreciated about the race in britz is that the Field was really small compared to the 2 races in Pretoria. The way the club members interacted and encouraged each other, has got me thinking of joining a running club.
The draw back of the britz race was that is started at 7am, so it was abit of a scorcher. I haven't seen heat lumps on myself like that in a while. I got trinkets, that is always the fun part trinkets, although I don't need such stuff it is cool. I need to either find my "cheap-eel-ler" watch or buy a new one. I have grown really attached to my watch, was only a R100 but I used it for the midmar mile and many other strenuous hardcore activities......for a watch. so I would be sad to lose it. The last couple of statements are a tad fluffy.
The chamberlain 10km race, eish the field was large, and I missed to see what time I had finished, but my trinket was different from the other people's trinkets who came in after an hour, so I skeem my time ws less than an hour, however it seems abit weird for me to shave of so much time of my 10kay, which makes me wonder if the race was really 10 km. either way I am pleased.
My weight/Body fat/measurement stats have remained the same which is a good thing, although slightly altered, seems to indicate that I am gaining some muscle.
Next up, half marathon, abit excited and nervous at the same time. hopefully I do well. Time to train like mad hard!

1st UP
As a young ambitious person, it is very easy to scoff at the notion of experience, and different avenues that experience can help you in. Experience is not necessarily going through a mistake and learning from it, it is also learning from other people and acknowledging and respecting their experience, and gaining an edge in that regard. Obviously we are thinking people and should take note and acknowledge the advice and make a judgement call on the in respect of your personal situation.
So how does the opening paragraph tie in with toady's blog, and incidentally the title as well,......here is how, Last weekend I completed my 1st race. It was the CSIR 10km race. I finished in a time of 1 hr and 7 mins, not a time I am pleased with because my rate is 8.95km/h. I would prefer a rate of 10km/h.
From what I understand the CSIR 10kay is rather difficult race and the time coupled with it being my 1st race ever is a pretty good thing. The thing that i learnt from the race was that the start is very hectic, with everybody moving along you are basically walking the start, and this frustrated me to no end, after about the 1km, I got to settle into my pace and the positive thing is that I probably did a rate greater than my final time indicated considering the slowness of the start. Towards the end of the race I really began enjoying other peoples company and eventually didn't want the race to end.
I had set aside 1 day to train hills (experince from other long distance runners), the result of that was that on race day I was making up quite abit on the other people when it came to the hill sections. My custom suited running shoes felt like I was running on air, I in fact paid less for custom quality pair of running shoes than if I had to go to the more reknowned sport stores. (good shoes and visiting a store specilaising in running shoes is learning expeince gained from other long distance runners)
The most important thing that I learnt was to control my temper, just to chill and enjoy the run. I am now looking forward to my next race.
I have gone abit ape and entered quite a few races but all this is to complete a marathon in November......5 weeks time, hectic!

breaking it down
well I lied, I am blogging after about a week, so what are my stats, it is week 10!
body weight: 77kg
body fat percentage: 20.65
waist measurement, 97cm
So since the start of this quest, I have lost 7 kgs, in 8 weeks and I have not eaten anything fried and just 1 sprite zero.....So the bottom line is there is progress.
When some one annoys me, just to show off I tell them that I lost 7 kgs(and as a secret inside joke, to expose their stupidity and ignorance), but its not as simple or rosey as that. off the 7 kgs only 5 kgs is fat, so that means that 2 kgs is a combination of muscle and water loss. So essentially what has happened is that my already slow metabolism has slowed even more because I have lost about 2 kgs of muscle (approximate). depressing :(
hopefully by my next measure I could drop about 1kg of fat but increase muscle mass. Back to hitting the weights!
Personally I would have preferred to have lost approximately 4 kgs after 8 weeks.
A few weeks ago, one of my friends was telling me that his body core temperature is 0.4 degrees lower than a normal human. I scoffed (secretly) at that bit of fact cause unless you are Lewis Gordon Pugh, how the F(expletive) are you going to determine that fact. I came across this interview of Mr Pugh, and he mentioned how Dr Noakes commented and coined the phrase "something" thermogenisis(or something funky like that), where essentially Pugh can raise his core temp in anticipation of swimming in really cold environments. He mentioned that before he swam doctor Noakes stuck a thermometer in his tush..............................huh WHAT!, yeah I wrote correctly he stuck a thermometer baby style, a way that gents of cape town can appreciate!
SO I wonder how did my friend determine his body core temperature, a very scary thought indeed!
I was at Eid namaaz, on friday and I was on my way to greet someone when I saw 2 off 6 year old kids, the one says to the other, "hey, titty come here, titty come here, here titty", to see 2 kids as young as that talking in that manner, on such a important religious day, after such an important month, just outside the musjid about 30mins after eid namaaz is initially hilarious..............however is this the state of the youth today(now I sound old), abit scary. Kids like this grow up to be brainless adults who indulge in dumb idol talk and carry on like cardboard gangsters without an original thought, or backbone, they become bullies.....like a couple of my dumb ass cousins.....the children of mordoor!
my wife has really awesome pretty hair and long, and so she was hitting the pantene where move they swirl their head and the hair follows, and because i am taller I can see the TV effect live. However it didn't quite come out, so instead of my wife trying again, I explained to her why it was impossible for, cause she was short and therefore could not create enough torque on the very light hair strands to create the desired motion. Now I am convinced I am a dork and engineer (in the cliched sense) and I love it. However my wife proved me wrong and did it properly the on he next attempt.
Don't i feel stupid, not at all, she properly relied on her muscle strenght to increase her centripetal force and create the effect (my wife does train weights after all, and is not as weak as move of my male friends) or she is an anomaly, that would make her NEO and me gay........nope nope it is her strenght training that gave her ability to turn on a pantene moment (moment hahahaha, get it, force times distance equals moment, pantene hair movement requires a moment, hahahaha)..........what a dork!

official!
You might have noticed that this update to the blog is abit late compared with my usual time slot. The reason being that the online comrades entries opened on the 1st of September, and I entered officially, well baring any bureaucratic BS. There is no turning back. "feel the rhythm feel the ride get on up its push cart time, coooool runnings" not quite but at the same time quite appropriate.
Well its the end of week 8 of my training, and in total I have missed 1 week of training, due to various ailments, but I feel good. From a religious stand point i'm sad that the month of ramadaan is going, but from a training point of view it has been challenging. I now plan on getting my self new running shoes and joining a running club, need to up the ante!
I have received 5 comments in total, on how much weight I have lost. As I have mentioned before its pleasing but not the aim of my training, just a nice by product. However you know your progress is good, when a conversation with good frineds start with "slms, hey what you been smoking, you lost quite abit there!" Before people question what I lost, they are refering to weight(as per theme of this paragraph) and not my junior head, because they are not males of the feminine variety.
my training partner, WMS, has hit abit of a snag with his training in that he has injured his knee (one of the 2) and as expected his inner bringer of doom, the stoic voice of reason, the voice of the responsible one came, no rained down, from.............................. the heavens, NO! his cubicle, that with the injury he has lost abit of training time and he is not sure if he can make the Bela Bela marathon!!! Well i've been delaying in agreeing with him but I can see his point and concern, however when we start hitting some road work together we will find out how serious or legit his concerns are. I pray that we get though this, the set up is like playing an awesome game but you cannot get past level 4 of 10...........epic fail.
I enjoy listening to talk radio 702, cause I am not a music fan and I enjoy reading websites iol, news 24, time and mma junkie, the last one doesn't quite fit the profile but it is enjoyable. If I have learn t any thing from the news is that there is 2 sides to every story. The truth is important in my eyes, if somebody made a mistake, so what as long as they take responsibility and do the right thing the next time, or learn from it.
I have no idea why people have the constant need to criticize government, constructive criticism is good but attacking someone personally is just stupid and doesn't benefit anyone. like public servants need more money, maybe we would have more if the president had less family, then the noob signs the comment as anonymous, that is cowardice! If you have an opinion, air it but "don't hide in your in your room and instruct some else to do the dirty work", take the RESPONSIBILITY for your opinions and actions. I think every country in the world has its own problems and I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt South Africa is one of the best countries to stay its simply awesome.
Monday is start of week 9 and its measurement time again. I am rather excited and I skeem i might have broken into the 70's weight wise. Expect my next addition at the same time slot.
Oh I made the cardinal sin of announcing "die bulls sal nie wen nie", in front of couple of bulls supporters, they are going to play the sharks(my team) this week end, this is a dangerous and often fatal task at the best of times (when they are sober).......but when they are drunk....eish......all i can say is thank god I have been training at running long distances. Its like when the old guy tied a piece of meat to Jean claude van damme(remember him) and the dogs started chasing him and he started running faster, if he had done what I had done as part of his training I don't think there would have been a kickboxer 2 to whatever. now that could have been a mercy SA could have bestowed on the rest of world......kickboxer 1(the good one) ONLY.......maybe that plan might be a flawed idea cause Van Damme would have been terminated(literally) and the directors would have resorted to that B grade guy from Kickboxer 2 onwards and the crappy genre would have began earlier. Tom Po would have kicked crappy Van Damme very very hard! bull supporter hard.

failings
the 1st kinks in my armour have shown itself, fortunately they are physical and not mental. I took wednesday training session off because my hammie was not feeling good and took saturday and will take today off because i've picked up a cold. heavy cough, major weakness and general nasal concerns. I did train on friday evening and it went rather well.
WMS and myself have outlined the Bela Bela marathon for a qualifying race, its not going to be easy. the 2nd half of the race is a kranker(all hill work), gonna be interesting.we will succeed!!
my eating has gone fairly well, nothing bad but I did slightly indulge on on thursday night. After a hard day on site and fasting a good 20 minutes later because the sun takes longer to set at altitude, I was the guest of my dear good friends the brothers FEK(&wife) and SEK(&wife) at SEK's abode. The chicken macaroni was awesome(I was accused of paying fake lipservice to the graze but it was seriously awesome) and a neat dessert(which whether was bought or home made, doesn't matter cause it was good), I did indulge abit but after doing my stats analysis was not too bad. FA the swaar of SEKandFEK was also present, that dude is F(expletive)ing unique, the way he talks, interacts and just general mannerisms, i don't mean in a bad way but a refreshingly unique way.
I have refined my goals wrt the marathons, after the 2 oceans marathon, I am going to chow a Fish and chips at hout bay, yes it is fried and yes I will chow it cause I would have earned it. then post comrades marathon I will crack a half (maybe whole) mutton bunny, yeah. Now those goals make perfect sense to me.
Well today i intend bringing a term to the forefront, brainstorming is when you have a problem and think major hard to come up with the solution, the process where you leave no stone unturned(mentally). Shit storming is when you leave no stone unturned in terms of talk or thought which is absolute shit (or tjol, as per bolg's title). the best shit storming sessions are when you are with good friends and where we just talk alot of tjol, especially at a meal or around a quality hookah.
U guessed it, there was a quality tjol session going down at SEK's abode on thursday night, the one item that was discussed and that I will share is that have I switched allegiances to the blue bulls, the short answer NO. If you had to go to fortress Loftess, those bulls supporters are on another level, like religion, paint house blue hire a bull level, infact they are so mad and crazy that they are on the same level as tik user, in the high tik-age(F(expletive)ing crazy), I will not, never, nada show my true colours which are black. I go so far as to say my blood is blue BUT my heart is black(under my breathe offcourse).
some might say i am a coward, but why get all serious and aggressive with someone just because we don't support the same team, defn not worth a hiding(receiving or handing one out).
so how does this madness help me, the best way I can ensure the protection of my kitties is too buy them little blue bull jerseys, the end result they will be both cute and safe!!! because no one and not even a taxi will harm a bulls supporter(human or otherwise) in Pretoria.
